UK successfully developed a bladder cancer diagnostic instrument based on urine odor

Release date: 2013-07-16

According to foreign media reports, two British scientists have developed an instrument that "smell" urine samples to diagnose bladder cancer, because the sensor inside the instrument can detect gaseous chemicals released by bladder cancer cells.
Professor Prubert of the University of Liverpool and Professor Ratcliffe of the University of the West England developed the instrument. Two scholars said that preliminary tests showed an accuracy of more than 90%, but further research is needed to complete the test method. If this test method is finally widely available, doctors will be able to diagnose earlier and increase the chances of recovery.
According to reports, 10,000 people in the UK suffer from bladder cancer each year. The medical profession has been looking for ways to diagnose this disease earlier, and the chances of curing early bladder cancer are higher. Experts have previously thought that urine odor is the key to research, because studies have shown that dogs can smell the smell of cancer.
Professor Ratcliffe said that after heating the urine samples, the instruments they developed were used to analyze the gaseous chemicals released by the samples. Of the 98 test samples, 24 were from men with bladder cancer and 74 from men with bladder disease but no cancer.
Professor Prubert said they need more samples to further test the accuracy of the instrument.
Dr Sarah Hazell of the charity “Cancer Research UK” affirmed the research report, “but this test method is still in its infancy and requires a larger sample, both male and female. Sample to test the instrument."
