When to plant winter potato

When to plant winter potato

Study tests show that Guangzhou is in late October to early November

In recent years, the area of potato production in Guangdong has been expanding year by year, with an annual planting area of 800,000 mu. Most of them are winter potatoes planted in mid-November after the late rice harvest, and very few are late autumn potatoes, and there are a small number of spring potatoes in the northern mountains.

Practices over the years have shown that the key periods and main meteorological factors affecting winter potato in Guangdong are low-temperature frost in January, spring rain in February and high-temperature and humid weather. In late afternoon rice (after the end of September to early October), Guangdong sows potatoes after harvest to avoid low temperature frost and rainy weather, which ensures the stable production of potatoes.

Research and experiments showed that in late autumn and winter potato in Guangzhou, the planting of potato plants sown in late October and early November was due to the high temperature in early October. Strong growth potential, light damage to pests and diseases, large tubers, high yield, and potato quality have also been greatly improved, mainly as reduced reducing sugar content. This shows that the period from late October to early November is the best sowing time for winter potato in Guangzhou due to the declining temperature and suitable rainfall, suitable for the growth of potatoes.

First, the material method

The experiment was conducted at the Baiyun Experimental Base of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Baiyun District of Guangzhou City in 2005. Before the test, it was used as rice. The soil texture was in the red soil of the south and the fertility was even. The tested potato variety was Yueyin No. 2, belonging to a processed variety.

The experiment set up four sowing dates, which were October 9, 2005 (I phase), October 20 (phase II), October 31 (phase III), and November 9 (phase IV). The treatment was repeated 4 times with 2 replicates each, 19 meters long, 1.2 meters wide (bag ditch), and 22.8 square meters in area. Two rows of plants were planted with 76 plants per row, with a row spacing of 25 cm and 30 cm. The temperature and rainfall during the test period are shown in the attached table, and cultivation and management are conducted as usual.

The survey items included seedling stage, plant height, number of leaves, number of tubers per plant, potato weight per plant, rate of commercial potato over 50 g, and reducing sugar, sucrose, total sugar, and starch content in the tuber.

Second, the test results

1, yield determination:

The results of potato yield measurements at different sowing dates showed that the lowest sowing date was on October 9th and the highest sown on November 9th. Among them, the yield per acre planted on November 9 was 786.8 kg, which was an increase of 75.43%, 22.71%, and 5.31% compared with October 9, October 20, and October 31, respectively; the planting treatment was conducted on October 31st. The yield per mu was 747.1 kg, which was 66.58% and 16.52% higher than the sowing treatment on October 9 and October 20, respectively; the sowing treatment on October 20 was 42.96% higher than the sowing treatment on October 9.

2. Main agronomic traits:

The results of the investigation of the main agronomic traits of potato at different sowing dates showed that the growth period for sowing was the longest on November 9th, with emergence and harvest being 85 days; the growth period for sowing on October 9 was the shortest, and the emergence to harvest was only 67 days.

In addition, there were differences in plant heights at different sowing dates. The plants sown on October 9 were the shortest and the plants sown on November 9 were the highest, but the differences in the number of leaves treated at different sowing dates were not significant.

3, potato characteristics:

From the test results, there was no difference in the number of tubers per plant treated in each sowing date, but the minimum planting rate per plant and the commodity tuber rate of more than 50 grams on October 9 were 107.9 grams and 25.5% respectively; November 9 The average planting rate of single plant potato and 50-gram or more commercial planting potatoes was the highest at 223.8 grams and 65.2% respectively.

4, quality comparison:

The results of the quality determination of potato chips treated at different sowing dates were not the same. Judging from the experimental conditions, the reducing sugar content of the tubers was the highest (0.33%) sown on October 9th, the lowest sowing date on October 31st and November 9th, all 0.18%, while sucrose, total sugar and The regularity of starch content change is not strong.
