Recently, Canadian researchers have recently developed a powerful "artificial arm" that can be used to "lift weights" driven by changes in ambient air humidity, effortlessly lifting weights many times their own weight.
The "artificial arm" developed by the research team is a small strip of plastic. They first apply a layer of chrome and gold to the surface of a plastic film, and then apply a layer of microgel. Microgels are cross-linked polymers that swell into a few micrometers of colloidal particles in a solvent. Canadian researchers used a negatively charged poly-N-isopropylacrylamide microgel and acrylic acid and precipitated on the gel as a positively charged counterion with a solution containing polycations.
When the entire material is dried, the hydrophobic interaction between the polycationic hydrocarbon regions is greatly enhanced, causing the polycation-containing layer to shrink. As the humidity of the air increases, it expands back to its original state. The researchers hanged one of these straps in the living room for testing. By changing the humidity, it can "catch" a small bag "lifting" it up. In another experiment, they hang a bunch of paper clips at the end of a miniature stretch "arm", changing the humidity to increase or decrease the weight of the "arm", and as a result it can lift up to 14 times its own weight.
