On July 6, the US FDA announced the approval of a magnifying ophthalmic implant to help those with impaired vision. This ophthalmic implant is used by completely removing the crystals from the patient's eye tissue and then implanting this magnifying intraocular lens, which magnifies the object to 2.2 to 2.7 times its original size.
The implant, developed by VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies, is primarily used in 75-year-olds with retinal macular degeneration who have lost vision in some intermediate locations due to retinal damage caused by the disease.
Implanting such a magnified crystal will enlarge the object in the visible area and reduce the blind spot in the middle of the visual field. The patient can naturally rotate the eyeball after implantation, but the surrounding vision will be affected. Because of this defect, the implant can only be implanted in one eye, and it also needs to adjust the two eyes to adjust each other. Due to the size of this device, patients may require a corneal transplant.
Amplified ophthalmic implants are approved for marketing>
