Russian scientists have developed biosynthesis materials for bone surgery

Scientists at the School of Engineering at the Far Eastern Federal University in Russia have developed new bioceramic material preparation techniques that can be applied to regenerative orthopedics.

One of the important characteristics of bioceramics as a human implant application is that it has a developed high-strength porous structure. This structure guarantees efficient bone fusion (the depth of bone tissue into the implant) and reduces excessive damage to the bone. At present, in the medical field, the problem of optimization and perfection of human bone tissue regenerative medical materials has not been solved. To adopt the traditional synthesis method, it is complicated to meet the above conditions, so it is necessary to seek a modern new preparation technology.

Scientists at the Far Eastern Federal University have proposed the synthesis of porous ceramics using a special material composite technique based on synthetic wollastonite (silicate grade). The uniqueness of this method is that two kinds of pore-forming additives are added at different stages of material synthesis, which can ensure the formation of a porous silicate skeleton with high structural strength and enable the implant material to coexist with the bio-organic medium.

The application of this technology can produce an unprecedented new bioactive ceramic material and an artificial bone matrix similar in structure and characteristics to the bone material. The developed material has reached the advanced level of bioceramics and meets all the requirements of modern medicine. The research results were published in the authoritative international journal "Royal Society of Chemistry".
