Germany uses respiratory testing to detect lung cancer early

Release date: 2017-08-04

Healthy lungs provide us with the air breathing necessary for life. However, lung cancer is now the most common cancer in Germany with an increase of 50,000 new patients per year. Generally, lung cancer is found to be late, because it does not cause obvious pain in the early stage. Therefore, the diagnosis and diagnosis of lag lead to lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in men, and the third leading cause of cancer death in women. Most lung cancer patients die five years after diagnosis, so early diagnosis is especially important.

Researchers at the Max Planck Heart and Lung Institute in Germany and the Lung Research Center in Bad Neuheim, through the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, have invented a method for early diagnosis of cancer with partners. They analyzed whether there were traces of RNA molecules in the respiratory samples of 138 cancer patients and healthy people. These molecules changed through cancer, thereby distinguishing between lung cancer patients and healthy people.

In this study, the breath test correctly diagnosed 90% of cases. In other words, this method is much more accurate than the previous X-ray and CT examinations, but it cannot completely replace the traditional method. This test method can be used as a supplement to reduce lung cancer cases that cannot be identified. Now the researchers' goal is to continue clinical research and continue to improve this breathing test method until it is mature enough to be used as soon as possible in the clinical diagnosis of daily lung cancer.
