Application of Potassium Diformate in Pig Production

Potassium diformate is a mixture of potassium formate and formic acid. It is one of the alternatives to pig feed additive antibiotics and the first non-antibiotic growth promoter allowed in the EU.

First, the main role and mechanism

1. Reduce intestinal pH. Potassium diformate is relatively stable in acidic environments and can easily decompose formic acid in neutral or alkaline environments. Therefore, it is easy to decompose in the weak alkaline environment of the pig intestine, and its product can significantly reduce the pH value of the food in the duodenum of pigs, and also promote the activation of pepsin.

2. Regulates intestinal microflora. The addition of potassium diformate to the diet of piglets can produce low levels of E. coli and Salmonella in the intestine of piglets, and high levels and diversity of Lactobacillus. At the same time, studies have shown that Salmonella in feces of piglets fed diets supplemented with potassium dicarboxylate is also significantly reduced.

3. Improve digestion and utilization. The addition of potassium diformate to diets promotes the secretion of pepsin, thus promoting the digestion and absorption of nutrients by the animal in the diet.

Second, the role of pig production

1. Effect on pig production performance. Studies have shown that in the diets of large pigs, breeding pigs and weaned piglets, potassium dicarboxylate was added at 1.2%, 0.8%, and 0.6%, respectively. There was no significant difference in daily gain and feed utilization efficiency between the pigs and compound antibiotics.

2. The role of carcass quality. The addition of potassium diformate to growing pig diets can reduce body fat content in pork dumplings and increase lean meat content in thighs, lateral abdomen, and waist, neck, and waist.

3. The role of diarrhea in weaned piglets. Because of the lack of antibodies provided by sows and insufficient secretion of their own stomach acid, weaned piglets are prone to diarrhea two weeks after weaning. Potassium diformate has antibacterial, bactericidal, and reduced intestinal flora, and has a positive effect on the prevention of diarrhea in piglets. Experiments have shown that adding potassium dicarboxylate to the diet of piglets can reduce the rate of diarrhea by 30%.
